Turn wages and weekly costs into a plan you can challenge before the money runs out. Sources checked 2026-08
Editorial status: this is a complete English editorial draft, not an Australian Government publication and not yet reviewed by a native-speaking Australian tax, financial-counselling or consumer-services professional. It is general planning information, not tax, financial, legal, dietary or vehicle advice. Current official pages and your own records always control.
If you need a workable money plan today
Protect the exit first. Keep return-travel money and an emergency buffer separate from normal spending.
Use verified pay, not a job advertisement. Check the Award, classification, employment type and penalties in Fair Work P.A.C.T.
Budget for every week. Work may stop, but accommodation, food, phone and transport do not. The planner below models 46 income weeks and 52 expense weeks.
Choose housing and transport together. A cheaper room can cost more if every shift needs a car or an expensive late-night trip.
Delay a car purchase until the full cost is visible. Price registration, insurance, fuel, servicing, tyres, repairs and resale risk before paying a deposit.
No food or safe place tonight? Use Ask Izzy to search nearby support. For immediate danger call 000.
Visa evidence, flights, insurance, temporary accommodation, bond, basic setup and the gap before the first cleared pay are different costs. Do not spend the same dollar twice.
Weekly survival
Record accommodation, food, transport, phone, health, job equipment and debt commitments. Use a weekly figure because rent and many wages are discussed weekly.
Exit and shocks
Keep a separate amount for leaving unsafe work or housing, urgent travel, a medical gap, replacing a phone, moving or one major vehicle repair.
AUD 5,000 is a visa-evidence reference, not a personal budget guarantee. Home Affairs says evidence of enough money is usually AUD 5,000 plus enough to leave Australia for a first subclass 462 visa. Requirements can differ by application and change over time; check the current first-visa page for your subclass before applying.
Adult award-free reference. Most employees are covered by an Award or agreement.
Award-free casual National Minimum Wage
AUD 33.05 per hour
Includes 25% casual loading. Do not use it as the legal rate for every job.
Standard WHM tax schedule
15% to 45,000; 30% to 135,000; 37% to 190,000; 45% above
Progressive annual estimate for WHM income. Treaty, residency, deductions and other income may change an assessment.
No TFN withholding
45%
The 2026 WHM withholding schedule says 45% if a TFN is not provided and no permitted exception applies.
Super guarantee reference
12% of ordinary time earnings when eligible
Not simply 12% of every payment. Overtime and eligibility can change the base.
Use the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool with the actual industry, role, age, level, employment type, day and time. An advertisement or this planner is not a pay check.
Match each payslip against your own start, finish and break records. Check gross pay, rate, hours, penalties, deductions, tax, net pay and super information.
A registered employer can withhold 15% up to AUD 45,000 of payments to a WHM with a TFN; the applicable rate changes above that threshold. Withholding during the year and the final tax assessment are not always identical.
Super is not spendable weekly cash. A temporary resident may later be eligible for a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment, with separate tax rules.
3. Stress-test the year, not only a good work week
Private local tool
Savings planner
Set a gross hourly rate, paid hours in each working week and two weekly cost assumptions. The model uses 46 income weeks, 52 expense weeks and the standard 2026–27 progressive WHM schedule. It does not send or collect your choices.
—Gross working week
—Average after-tax working week
—Weekly costs
—Working-week remainder
—Modelled annual remainder
—After-tax income in expense weeks
Modelled annual WHM tax: —. Rough eligible super reference: — per working week. This excludes deductions, other income, tax-residency or treaty outcomes, actual payroll rounding, Award penalties, overtime, irregular weeks, DASP tax and large one-off costs.
Read the two different weekly results correctly. “Average after-tax working week” spreads estimated annual tax over 46 paid weeks. “Weekly costs” continue for 52 weeks. The annual remainder is therefore not the working-week remainder multiplied by 46.
4. Price housing and transport as one decision
Use current listings and official journey planners rather than a fixed city-price table. Asking rents, fares, concessions and temporary policy discounts change quickly.
Test the first and last service for likely shift times, not only a daytime map.
Check the accepted fare medium, concession eligibility, daily or weekly caps and the cost of getting to the airport or a remote work site.
For a car, add registration, compulsory and optional insurance, fuel, parking, tolls, maintenance, tyres, roadside help and an unexpected repair buffer.
If a card surcharge applies, the ACCC says it must not exceed the business's cost of acceptance. If there is no surcharge-free payment method, the minimum unavoidable surcharge must be included in the displayed price.
5. Compare food by unit price, then reuse ingredients
No supermarket is always cheapest. Compare the price per kilogram, litre or 100 grams for the product you will actually use. A special label, large pack or loyalty offer is not proof of lower unit cost.
A low-waste base basket: oats, rice or pasta; eggs, canned beans or lentils; canned tomatoes; frozen vegetables; onions; and one flexible protein. Plan three meals that use the same ingredients before opening the specials page.
Overnight oats
Mix oats, milk or a suitable alternative and fruit; refrigerate. Add yoghurt or seeds only if they fit your budget and dietary needs.
Egg, rice and frozen vegetables
Heat cooked rice and vegetables thoroughly, then add egg. Cool leftovers quickly and refrigerate.
Lentil tomato pasta
Simmer canned tomatoes, drained lentils and onion; combine with pasta. Freeze an extra portion if it will not be eaten soon.
Chicken and vegetable tray bake
Cut pieces evenly and cook the centre of poultry to at least 75°C. Keep raw and ready-to-eat utensils separate.
For ordinary clothing, inspect seams, zips, stains, smell, fabric wear and washing instructions. Compare the total cost of travel and replacement, not only the tag price.
For safety boots, high-visibility clothing, gloves, masks, hearing or eye protection, ask what the actual task and workplace risk assessment require.
Safe Work Australia says a business must manage PPE duties, including selecting suitable PPE, fit, maintenance and information or training. A worker should not guess a substitute from a fashion shelf.
7. Buy or sell a used car without confusing a platform with protection
These direct commercial links are unpaid routes, not endorsements. Listings, ranking, identity checks, fees and dispute support differ. Aussie WHV Compass does not accept vehicle listings, deposits, identity documents or payments, and does not act as seller, buyer, agent, mechanic, insurer or dispute handler.
Get the VIN before money moves. Match it on the vehicle, registration record and seller's evidence.
Run the official PPSR search on the day of purchase or the day before. The online vehicle search costs AUD 2 and can identify a registered security interest, stolen status or written-off status.
Know what PPSR does not prove. It does not tell you the amount owing, current owner, complete history, odometer accuracy, fines or mechanical condition.
Use an independent qualified mechanic. A roadworthy or safety certificate is not a full pre-purchase inspection and local requirements differ.
Check current registration and seller authority through the state or territory service. Compare name, VIN, registration and transfer documents. Do not copy another jurisdiction's deadline or form.
Price insurance before purchase. Do not assume registration includes cover for damage to your own car or another person's property.
Use a written receipt and cleared payment. Record the parties, date, price, VIN, registration, odometer and included items. Do not release a car or keys because a buyer shows a transfer screenshot.
Consumer protection depends on who sold the car. ACCC says consumer guarantees apply to cars bought from a licensed dealer. A private sale does not provide the same protections, although title, undisturbed possession and no hidden debts or charges still matter. State and territory vehicle rules also apply.
All eight government transfer starting pages were opened and checked on 2026-08-30. Deadlines, inspection, duty, roadworthiness, identity and seller-notification requirements differ; follow the current page for the vehicle's registration location.
9. When the plan no longer covers essentials
Stop optional transfers, subscriptions and purchases. Protect food, safe housing, essential medicine, phone access and transport to verified work or support.
Contact the provider before missing a payment. Ask about a hardship team or payment arrangement; do not borrow from an unsolicited message or social-media lender.
Search Ask Izzy for nearby food, housing, health and other support.
If work is unpaid or deductions are unexplained, preserve rosters, messages, payslips, bank records and your hours, then use the English workplace help route.
If a scam caused the loss, call the bank through an independently verified channel and follow the English recovery sequence.
